Founded in 2014, Caru'n Pentrefi Love Our Villages, and with funding and support from Tidy Wales, we aim to enhance and improve the villages and hamlets that comprise the Glyntraian Ward in the beautiful Ceiriog Valley on the North Wales border with Shropshire. Caru'n Pentrefi is Welsh for Love Our Villages. And we do. Our village tidy team of volunteers meet monthly in the summer and autumn months to complete litter pics and other visual and environmental enhancements, primarily in the villages of Pontfadog, Dolywern and Llwynmawr. We were extremely proud to be finalists in the Transforming Communities category of the National Tidy Wales Awards 2017. Our Chairman is Ralph Bennett, Secretary is Mary Thompson. We have received grant funding from Glyntraian Community Council, Tidy Wales, Gareth Morris Construction and GW Hughes but the majority of our equipment is paid for by fundraising. In 2019, volunteer, Anjie Bennett had an inspired idea to create a series of nesting sites across the villages of Glyntraian whilst at the same time marking the centenary of the end of the Great War. Another of our fantastic volunteers, Gary Crossley, hand created 64 bird boxes - one box in memory of every man whose name appears on the war memorial in the centre of the village of Pontfadog. On Monday 7th February 2019 we had the privilege of listening to a local bird ringing expert who explained how to best site the bird boxes in local gardens and trees. Happily, we know many of the boxes were occupied immediately and we are delighted  to see our small garden birds return to nest and breed year on year since. Gary’s hand-made bird boxes are just one of the lasting legacies he leaves behind. Sadly, Gary - one of our most enthusiastic founder members - passed away in 2021. He was a local community champion who embraced Caru'n Pentrefi's ethos with typical gusto, ingenuity and enthusiasm. He was a talented engineer by trade and had a terrific 'man cave' from which he produced all manner of excellent inventions - from incredible Santa floats complete with flashing neon lights to our WWI legacy bird boxes.
